New Home Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy being greeted by DGP S.S.P. Yadav at her home in Hyderabad.Patlolla Sabitha Indra Reddy (46) became the first woman Home Minister of the State after Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy allocated portfolios to all the 35 members of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.
The three-time legislator served as the Mines and Geology Minister in the earlier government. She will head the 80,000 strong police force in the State at a time when the anti-naxalite operations have reached a decisive stage. Incidentally, her husband late P. Indra Reddy was also Home Minister in N. T. Rama Rao Cabinet.

Sabitha Indra Reddy keen on ‘Palle Nidra’ scheme
Home Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy on Monday strongly advocated the ‘Palle Nidra’ (Night Stay) programme where officials of various departments would stay overnight in villages to review welfare schemes and address people’s grievances.
“Getting to know the villagers and resolving their problems will bring in lot of fulfilment. It will also save, for the rural residents, the trouble of coming all the way to the city,” she said.
Large-scale inundation
Visiting Ranga Reddy district Collectorate for the first time after taking over as Minister, Ms. Reddy, also the in-charge Minister for the district, reviewed the activities of various departments.
Concern
Expressing concern about monsoons leading to large-scale inundation, she directed the irrigation officials to take up long-term repair works for tanks such as Mantrala Cheruvu and Saroornagar Tank.
Upon being informed about the lack of Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in the district, the Minister asked the Animal Husbandry officials to moot the proposal formally so that she could work on it.
She expressed annoyance at the slow progress of Shivasagar Irrigation Project, which remains on paper for the last five years after the foundation was laid for the irrigation project.
Raghuma Reddy, the APTransco Superintendent Engineer, replying to a question by the district Collector M. Dana Kishore, proposed the High Voltage Distribution System as remedy to the problem of hanging power lines in the villages.
Also implanted into the scheme is a plan to regularise the unauthorised connections, he said, citing the programme’s success in Nalgonda.
Power officials were asked to speed up sanctioning of power connections to houses constructed under Indiramma scheme.
Assurance
Home Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy on Monday assured to get a month’s additional salary sanctioned for police personnel for their dedicated efforts during the recent elections and also to increase their pay and allowances.
She gave the assurance when office-bearers of the AP Police Officers’ Association (APPOA) came to congratulate her. The association decided to felicitate her on June 12. A press release said APPOA thanked Finance Minister K. Rosaiah, who promised to ensure that police personnel get an additional month’s salary for their poll work.

The commando outfit of the Organisation for Counter Terrorist Operations
The commando outfit of the Organisation for Counter Terrorist Operations (Octopus), the elite force formed by the government to tackle terrorism in the State, will come into being on August 15.
It will initially have 250 commandos who have already been rigorously trained to handle terrorists. Another 250 commandos, now under training, will be inducted later.
Speaking to reporters after Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy held discussions on the subject here on Tuesday, Home Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy and Director General of Police S.S.P. Yadav said a major part of the initial recruitment of 1,500 personnel for Octopus was over. Another 1,500 men would be recruited subsequently.
The Home Minister said the commandos would be geared to meet any challenge of terrorism be it Hyderabad, Sriharikota where the rocket-launching centre is located, Visakhapatnam which hosts many defence establishments and Tirupati, the country’s biggest pilgrim centre.
She said 70 acres of land was being allotted at Ibrahimpatnam near the city to establish the headquarters and other facilities of the Octopus.
The Hyderabad unit of the National Security Guards (NSG) would also be located nearby. Land would be acquired from farmers only after ensuring payment of proper compensation.
In reply to a question, the Mr. Yadav said a counter-intelligence network would be established within the Octopus.
